This is a very emotional time, if the death was unexpected at home call 911. This will activate the Police and EMS, it is then that the death will be confirmed by EMS and the police will notify the OCME (Office of the Chief Medical examiner) of their findings. The deceased will be transported to either to the OCME for further investigation or released to the funeral home.
Even expected deaths are emotional, call your hospice nurse, they will come down and pronounce the death. They will issue a death certificate, the funeral home can be notified and will come when you are ready.

Embalming is a surgical process that is done by a licensed embalmer replacing blood with formaldehyde type or similar chemicals, its primary purpose is for disinfecting. Although it slows the decaying process it is not a long term preservation method. Embalming is not required by law, but is required by most funeral homes for public viewing.
