Joseph Kastrup Obituary

EAST HADDAM -Joseph Svend Kastrup, 71, formerly of Madison Connecticut, died on March 30, 2019 as a result of a long illness. Joseph was born on November 9, 1947 in Wakefield, Nebraska to Alice Currao and Kenneth Kastrup. He was an only child and was predeceased by his parents. Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen, his two devoted sons, Timothy and wife Gina of Colchester, Connecticut, Kevin of Monterey, California, and his two adoring grandsons, Timothy Jr. and Brendan.
Although Joseph was an only child, he was totally embraced by Kathleen’s family who thought of him as a true brother and son. He is survived by his mother-in-law Kay Mullane, in-laws Maureen and Robert Browning, William Jr. And Kathryn Mullane, Robert and Leslie Mullane, Eileen and Stephen Garger, Thomas and Linda Mullane, Colleen and Michael Moore, Kenneth and Michelle Mullane, Pegeen and Edward Newman and by his scores of nieces and nephews.Joseph was a proud graduate of Marist college in Poughkeepsie, New York and was a member of the inaugural Marist college football team. After graduation with a B.S. degree in business administration, Joseph began his long career in financial services. Before his illness forced him to retire, he was a director of a financial institution in Charleston, South Carolina. During his long business career, Joseph lived in Europe and made friends from all over the world. Joseph was an avid art collector and was like a child when he played trains with his grandsons. He was a devoted advocate of rescuing dogs, especially those who were older and needed a place to live out their lives. When his sons were younger, he volunteered hours of his time coaching his sons in baseball and soccer. Everyone wanted to play on a team coached by coach Kastrup.
We all loved Joseph as a husband, father, grandfather, son-in-law and brother-in law. He was kind, good-natured and generous with all that he had. He believed in the power of kindness and practiced it every day of his life. We will miss him terribly and were so very fortunate to have had him in our lives. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2019 from 5:00-8:00 at Belmont Funeral Home, 144 South Main Street Colchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 5, 2019 at St. Andrew’s Church, 128 Norwich Avenue Colchester, CT at 11:00 am. Burial will immediately follow at Linwood cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Joseph would have liked donations be made to the Marist College Football Club Office of College Advancement at Marist college, 3399 North Road Poughkeepsie, New York 12601(www.marist.edu/give) or to Paws New England, PO Box 542, Ashland, Ma. 01721 (www.pawsnewengland.com/donate).
