Richard Wood

Richard Wood, 78, of Lisbon, died unexpectedly Dec. 15 after a brief illness. He was born on October 9, 1942, the son of the late John and Helen (Rimek) Wood. 

Richard graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1961, but he got more than a degree; he met the love of his life, Elaine Beauregard, at NFA. They were married on July 6, 1963. Richard spent 35 years as a shipfitter at Electric Boat, retiring at age 55 as a supervisor. After retirement, Richard and Elaine enjoyed traveling to all 50 states. They went on 17 cruises, traveled internationally and took road trips to see their granddaughter play college basketball. At home, he was Mr. Fix It, able to make anything work again and excelled at carpentry. Richard was very proud of his lifelong Lisbon home and his family. He loved NASCAR and UCONN women’s basketball. 

In addition to his wife of 57 years, Richard is survived by his children, Doreen (Andre) St. George of Lisbon, Christine (Stacy Jewell) Wood of Norwich, and Richard Wood Jr. of Norwich; his grandchildren, Rachael (Dan) Guthrie, Jennifer (Kelsey) Holcomb, Mark Escobido Jr. and David (Ashantee) Wood; and great grandchildren, his “babies,’’ Layne and Everly Guthrie. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jack Wood, and sister, Carol Wood. 

Belmont Funeral Home LLC is entrusted with the arrangements. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date when his family and friends can gather again.
